Historian and filmmaker Susan Stryker discusses and shows clips from a campy archival treasure—a 1962 film from the Philippines featuring U.S. transsexual celebrity Christine Jorgensen, who was then performing an extended run at a Manila nightclub. The zany plot, revolving around seven gender-bent siblings and the wome...n who love them, zig-zags between genres as well as genders: romantic comedy, musical, war story. Jorgensen turns out to be the straightest part of this incredibly queer movie! Christine Jorgensen, now a historical icon, was world news in 1954 as the young U.S. navy officer who decided to transition into a woman.
Susan Stryker is one of the most important transgender historians and is Associate Professor at the Indiana University of Bloomington. She is co-editor of the Transgender Studies Reader with Stephen Whittle and has written the foreword to Christine Jorgensen's biography. Stryker is co-director of the Emmy award winning documentary Screaming Queen, screened at the NTGF 2005.

Mainstay
Dir. Elliot Montague, fiction, 2008, USA, 54', English with no subtitles
Mainstay's female-to-male protagonist returns home to the snowy drifts of rural Maine to attend his ex-lover's funeral. He also finds his hometown and family cold to and confused about how to handle his transition. The psychological and phys...ical landscapes suggest an intimate space of family and the intrusion of a hostile public. In long shots that linger on the often times painful scenes of longing and desire for recognition, the film develops a melancholic, but ultimately contemplative landscape in which the viewer might come to recognize his or her own losses.
Dressed as Me
Dir. Claudia Bach, experimental short, Switzerland 2009, 11 minutes, German with English subtitles
Donning a moustache and romantic clothes, Bach's interviewee Romeo Koyte Rosen discusses her relationship to the power of the 'tache to be a shield, a guise, and an amulet to bring her in closer to her ideal place between a man and a woman. Shot in the snowy drifts of Switzerland.

Vittoria Colonna, documentary, Ireland 2008, 80 minutes, English with no subtitles
The economic prosperity of Ireland provides the ground for a lively, multicultural queer community to bloom. The Italian Fabio Ferri finds a place in Dublin for his drag queen persona and alter ego Sibyl Vane. In the same club scene we me...et Sahara and her lovely Asian trans woman community as well as the local Irish drag king/burlesque queen performer Shani Williams. The introvert musician, Lee, shares how becoming a transman was liberating, and last but not at least, the novelist Crystal is portrayed, who found support from her church, which accepts her community of transvestites and transgenders. Identities is beautifully shot, mainly in black and white. Its a poetic picture book of five creative souls that illustrates the rich spectrum of gender diversity.
